Most Courteous Greetings all!

Barony of Smoking Rocks is pleased to announce the second year of our Pages’ School!

The goal of the Pages’ School is to provide educational and social opportunities for young people within the East Kingdom in various aspects of the Middle Ages, to encourage the growth of leadership skills, personal responsibility and respect for self and others. The Pages’ School offers a well-rounded education through coursework, individual projects, mentoring and formal fostering, which includes study in three areas: Chivalry, Arts & Sciences, and Service.

Enrollment in the Barony of Smoking Rock’s Pages’ School is open to all children of the East Kingdom between the ages of six and seventeen. Younger siblings are welcome to participate in age-appropriate activities with a parent or responsible guardian present. We encourage students of all ages and abilities to work together, participating in hands-on activities, creating group projects, and taking part in discussions on the topic at hand. While students may choose which courses to attend, advancement through the Pages’ School requires participation in all three areas of learning. The Pages’ School is organized into three levels of participation and achievement -- Junior, Senior, and Graduate. Students are assessed individually on their effort and enthusiasm, and will receive credit for every activity that they participate in.

Pages’ School courses are offered within three disciplines:

Chivalry, Arts & Sciences, and Service. Chivalry courses not only instruct students in the military arts of the medieval period, but also promote the values of chivalric behaviour on and off the field. Although participation in youth boffer fighting and archery are voluntary, students must at least attend instruction in order to receive credit. Arts & Sciences courses cover a broad range of non-martial skills and include both practical and academic topics. Training in Service encompasses both Chivalry and Arts & Sciences, as students will gain experience in actual service in a variety of settings. We also encourage each student to choose a longer-term project from one of the three study areas to work on between terms.

Classes are organized into academic terms that will run four times per year: Whitsun (mid May), Lammas (early August), Martinmas (mid November), and Candlemas (early February). Two adult instructors and a parent volunteer will be present in the classroom at all times. The Pages’

School is a forum for the enjoyment of learning and creating friendships within the Barony. Students must display courteous and respectful behaviour towards their instructors, fellow students, and others at all times, inside and outside the classroom, and inappropriate behaviour is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

If you are interested in enrolling your child or children in the Pages’ School, please fill out and sign an enrollment form for each child.  We encourage parents to participate in all aspects of their child’s learning experience as classroom instructors or assistants or providing input to the Pages’ school staff. If you have any questions or comments regarding the Pages’ School, please feel free to contact the headmistress at any time. We hope to see your son or daughter in class soon!

 Yours in Service,

Molly Blythe (Mali Lim), East Kingdom Deputy Chancellor Minor and Headmistress of the Barony of Smoking Rocks Pages’ School
